Cannabis use during breastfeeding has become increasingly common. While breastfeeding offers many benefits, THC and CBD can pass to the infant through breastmilk. Many women who use cannabis before pregnancy may avoid breastfeeding because they are unsure about the risks.

Our study will examine how cannabis exposure during pregnancy and breastfeeding affects early childhood growth and neurodevelopment. We will also study whether combined exposure during both pregnancy and breastfeeding may have a larger effect than exposure during pregnancy alone.

Our long-term goal is to provide families and healthcare providers with better information to support evidence-based decisions around cannabis use during breastfeeding.
